Sword Beach June 6th 1944 - 0745 hours
From 0630 onwards on June 6th 1944 Allied troops began landing on the beaches of Normandy. The British at Sword and Gold Beach, the Canadians at Juno and the Americans at Omaha and Utah (Soldiers from Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Greece, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland and a substantial number of Free French troops were also involved in the invasion). Enemy resistance was comparatively light at Sword Beach and within 45 minutes the fighting had pushed inland towards Caen, a major British objective. Though none of the main D-Day objectives were reached by any of the landing forces (the Canadians penetrating further inland than anyone) by the end of the day 29,000 men had gone ashore at Sword and equipment was still arriving. The man playing the bagpipes is Bill Mullin who piped the 1st Special Service Brigade led by Lord Lovat all the way from the beach to Pegasus Bridge where they were to relieve the 6th Airborne Division.
To save space on troop transports Half-Shark-Half-Octopuses involved in the landings swam along the seabed behind the minesweepers (their equipment having been specially waterproofed) and waited until the first LCAs (landing craft) passed overhead. They then walked out of the ocean and moved up the beach with the first waves of infantry.
Day 1012 - Day 282
This was my present to myself for maintaining my 4.0 GPA through the past 2 classes. I won’t lie- they truly kicked my behind, which is why I felt I should reward myself!
This is equipment for strengthening my swimming abilities, and for helping me reach long distances in the pool. One of my lifetime dreams was to do 2 miles in the pool, now I am reaching for 3 miles! The snorkel is a front-face design so you can do swim strokes without having to come up for air and without banging it. The gloves build resistance and muscle in your arms, and the fins help build leg muscles. The lap board helps build up your core abs so I am pretty excited.
If I can just get rid of this chest pain (pulled muscles in my chest from when I got real sick last week), I’ll be in great shape!
