Entering operational service in 1962, Titan I was the United States' first multistage ICBM (Intercontinental Ballistic Missile). Incorporating the latest design technology, Titan provided an additional nuclear deterrent to complement the U.S. Air Force's Atlas missile. Though the SM-68A was operational for only three years, it was an important step in building the Air Force's strategic nuclear forces.

The first American ICBM based in underground silos, Titan I gave USAF managers, contractors and missile crews valuable experience building and working in vast bunkers containing everything the missiles and crews needed for operation and survival. These early silos, however, had certain drawbacks. First, the missiles took about 15 minutes to fuel, and then had to be lifted to the surface on huge elevators for launching, which slowed their reaction time. Rapid launching was crucial to avoid possible destruction by incoming missiles, even though Titan shelters were designed to withstand nuclear blasts. Second, the missiles' placement close together in groups of three --necessary because they shared a single ground-based radio guidance system -- made them vulnerable to nuclear attack. All-inertial guidance, which does not depend on ground computers, was not yet perfected.

In its brief career, Titan I equipped six squadrons of nine missiles each, in Colorado, Idaho, California, Washington state and South Dakota. Although Titan I's two stages gave it true intercontinental range and foreshadowed future multistage rockets, its propellants were dangerous and hard to handle. Super-chilled liquid oxygen oxidizer had to be pumped aboard the missile just before launch, and complex equipment was required to store and move this liquid. Kerosene fuel also was pumped aboard just before launch.

Titan I allowed USAF missileers to perfect techniques for efficiently operating strategic missile facilities spread across several states and requiring great coordination and skill. Still, the SM-68A was a transitional missile. Even as the USAF deployed 54 Titan Is on operational alert from 1963-1965, it prepared to deploy more advanced Titan IIs in their place. Later missiles, like Titan II, used safer fuels and more advanced guidance, but followed the SM-68A example of underground basing and multiple stages.

Ascension Spurge (E. origanoides), an endangered species of plant found only on the Ascension Island, predominantly on the properties used by the 45th Operations Group, Detachment 2, Ascension Auxiliary Airfield (AAF), in the South Atlantic Ocean. A few dozen of these plants survive in the wild near the white marker, halfway up a rugged volcanic hill. Nearby, weather equipment records environmental conditions of this spurge site. Ongoing studies by the Computer Sciences Raytheon contract environmental engineering associates have taught them that this endemic plant survives best in these remote locations. Understanding the weather can help choose better locations and conditions to replant and promote the survival of this small plant. Evasive plants spread across the foreground occupying space that the spurge needs to establish itself and send roots deep into the rocky hillside. Although, all U.S. Air Force bases have environmental programs, this small remote island environment allows easy observation of the efforts supporting the endangered spurge plant and self-sufficient water, power and waste programs. "It is exciting to see this base operate in a "green" environment day-to-day. It is cost effective and at the same time, protects our environment without interfering with any of our various missions down here. Going "green" has actually helped us become more efficient providing power, and water to the air field and the base" said Major Jay Block, commander of Detachment 2. (U.S. Air Force photo/Lance Cheung) The mission of Detachment 2 is support of eastern range space launches by collecting and disseminating radar, telemetry and tracking data. One of the many radar, tracking and communication sites can be seen on the hilltops. Many more are positioned throughout the volcanic island. Ascension island is 35 square miles in a remote island location midway between Brazil and Angola. The nearest country is Liberia - 1000 miles away. (U.S. Air Force photo/Lance Cheung)

New Proforce Us Air Force Survival Handbook Bible For Pilots Surprisingly Readable Interesting

Written for use in formal United States Air Force survival training courses, the U.S. Air Force Survival Handbook iis the bible for pilots who want to stay alive-no matter what. Assuming, as the Air Force does, that flight personnel may be faced at any time with a bailout or crash landing in hostile territory without supplies, the advice here is superlatively practical, but also surprisingly readable and interesting. Detailing specific survival threats at sea, in the tropics, in the desert, in Arctic conditions, and the psychological perils of imprisonment and torture, this handbook is replete with fascinating and useful (if unsettling) information. Precisely written, profusely illustrated, and completely authoritative, this is an essential book for anyone-soldier or civilian-looking for knowledge that could prove to be the difference between life and death in a dangerous situation.

Once Upon a Quinceanera: Coming of Age in the USA

Once Upon a Quinceanera: Coming of Age in the USA

A “phenomenal, indispensable” (USA Today) exploration of the Latina “sweet fifteen” celebration, by the bestselling author of How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents

The quinceanera, a celebration of a Latina girl’s fifteenth birthday, has become a uniquely American trend. This lavish party with ball gowns, multi-tiered cakes, limousines, and extravagant meals is often as costly as a prom or a wedding. But many Latina girls feel entitled to this rite of passage, marking a girl’s entrance into womanhood, and expect no expense to be spared, even in working-class families. Acclaimed author Julia Alvarez explores the history and cultural significance of the “quince” in the United States, and the consequences of treating teens like princesses. Through her observations of a quince in Queens, interviews with other quince girls, and the memories of her own experience as a young immigrant, Alvarez presents a thoughtful and entertaining portrait of a rapidly growing multicultural phenomenon, and passionately emphasizes the importance of celebrating Latina womanhood.

Loveland, Colorado

Loveland, Colorado

The City of Loveland is a Home Rule Municipality that is the second most populous city in Larimer County, Colorado, United States. Loveland is situated 46 miles (74 km) north of the Colorado State Capitol in Denver. Loveland is the 14th most populous city in the State of Colorado. The United States Census Bureau estimates that in 2005 the population of the City of Loveland was 59,563,[5] the population of the Fort Collins-Loveland Metropolitan Statistical Area was 271,927 (163rd most populous MSA),[6] the population of the Denver-Aurora-Boulder Combined Statistical Area was 2,869,377 (15th most populous CSA),[7] and the population of the Front Range Urban Corridor was 4,013,055.[8] The city's public schools are part of the Thompson R2-J School District.
The city was founded in 1877 along the newly-constructed line of the Colorado Central Railroad, near its crossing of the Big Thompson River. It was named in honor of William A.H. Loveland, the president of the Colorado Central Railroad. The city was founded one mile (1.6 km) upstream from the existing small settlement of St. Louis, the buildings of which were moved to the site of Loveland. For the first half of the 20th century the town was dependent on agriculture. The primary crops in the area were sugar beets and sour cherries. In 1901, the Great Western Sugar Company built a factory in Loveland, which remained as a source of employment until its closure in 1985. During the late 1920s the Spring Glade orchard was the largest cherry orchard west of the Mississippi River. At that time the cherry orchards produced more than $1 million worth of cherries per year. A series of droughts, attacks of blight and finally a killer freeze destroyed the industry. By 1960 cherries were no longer farmed. In the late 20th century, the economy diversified with the arrival of manufacturing facilities by Hewlett-Packard, Teledyne, and Hach, a water quality analysis equipment manufacturer. A new medical center currently under construction is expected to add a substantial amount of employment in that sector as well.

The city is south of Fort Collins, its larger neighbor and the county seat. The two cities have been steadily growing towards each other over the last several decades and are considered to be a single metropolitan area by the U.S. government. The establishment of county-owned open space between the two communities in the 1990s was intended to create a permanent buffer to contiguous growth. Loveland has aggressively expanded its incorporated limits eastward to embrace the interchange of Interstate 25 and U.S. Highway 34, and is currently developing the area. In the last decade, the intersection has become a primary commercial hub of northern Colorado, with the construction of shopping centers and the Budweiser Events Center. A new medical center and mall have also been built on the Interstate 25 and U.S. Highway 34 interchange. This area is known as Centera. The interchange is shared with it's smaller neighbor Johnstown, of Weld County.

Built in 1888 for the Universal Exhibition, this monumental arch in the centre was made with red bricks which gives it a special look and is the entrance to the Parc de la Ciutadella (citadel park) where the exhibition was held. The avenue has many statues of historical figures and ornamental street lamps that also serve as benches.
The Arc de Triomf was designed by the architect Josep Vilaseva i Casanovas. It is a construction of exposed reddish brickwork, in Neo-Moorish style, very popular at the time. On the top of the arch, on the frieze on the side which faces Passeig de Sant Joan, there is the Barcelona rep les nacions sculpture, by Josep Reynes, representing Barcelona welcoming visitors; on the other side there is Recompensa, an early sculpture by Josep Llimona which represents awards being given to participants at the Exhibition. The friezes on the sides represent allegories to architecture and industry, by Antoni Vilanova, and the allegory to commerce and art by Torquat Tasso.

A New Standard in Low Frequency Monitoring For years, KRK subwoofers have been the choice for accurate low frequency monitoring in studios large and small. Now, the K10s provides a new standard for even better performance and accuracy, raising the bar once again. Whether you are mixing in a 2.1 or 5.1 surround environment or just looking to upgrade the low-frequency extension of your existing monitors, the K10s will provide the low frequency detail and accuracy that will help you to create a better mix.

Let’s Be Up Front Take a look at competitive subwoofer monitors and you'll find ports on the back of the cabinet. These rear-firing ports tend to create bass coupling with walls and corners over-amplifying low frequency information which in turn colors your mix. The superior design of the KRK10s includes front-firing ports which are just the right shape to reduce port turbulence. You'll appreciate the clean and accurate bass performance this approach delivers, even at high SPLs.

Feel the Bass You need to feel the bass and our proprietary signature yellow woofer delivers tight, clear low end response. Our engineers and listening panel took the K10s speaker voicing to even more accurate levels. Featuring a sweepable 50 Hz – 130 Hz low pass filter, your K10s provides flexible control for any monitoring system. What you hear is what you are intended to hear, coloration is not part of the spec. This performance is brought to you by drivers that are custom-designed by our world-class studio monitor engineering team, for a clear, low-distortion performance.

Take Control Professional engineers like the ability to hear how the sub is affecting the mix. Your KRK subwoofer is equipped with a bypass feature which allows you to defeat the sub and provide full range audio to your recording monitors. To use the bypass function, you will need to use a standard latching 1/4 mono footswitch.
